Top Ten Tuesday: Books to Read If You Like The Fault in Our Stars

Tuesday, September 29, 2015 10 comments

The Broke and the Bookish hosts this weekly feature every Tuesday. This week the theme is what books to read if you like this super popular book/author. I decided to books to read if you loved The Fault in Our Stars. I could only come up with six for this one so let me know if you can think of any that I left off!

12700353

These two books are A LOT different. However, Me and Earl is something a little bit lighter for readers that like the powerful story of TFIOS. Trust me, it will have you laughing out loud.

6604794

Both of these books explore the topic of death and grief. They also both have incredible love stories. I know it's probably impossible to believe, but Joe is actually just as swoonworthy as Augustus.

3. Everything, Everything

18692431

Although the illness in discussion are both very different, they still explore the subject of death and love. They also deal with family, particularly the main characters parents. Both of the main characters are bonded by having similar interests.

4. Jellicoe Road

2999475

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read. Both stories take on the subjects of love, death, grief, and growing up. Jonah Griggs is my all time favorite book boyfriend.

5. Truest

19370252

There's no illness here, but Silas actually reminds me a lot of Gus in terms of personality. I think fans of TFIOS will enjoy Sommers beautiful writing.

6. The Truth About Forever

51737

This is much lighter, but Macy still has to deal with the loss of her father. Sarah Dessen definitely has a different style of writing from John Green, but they both are amazing storytellers.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Books On My Fall TBR List

Monday, September 21, 2015 9 comments

You know the drill by now. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. The theme this week is top books on your TBR list for this fall.

Release date: October 6th

24605853

I haven't read Cammie McGovern's debut novel "Say What You Will," but I'm looking forward to reading this one! Side note: I also really love this cover.

Release date: October 6th

18245617

I'm looking forward to this one because it has a lot of positive things to say about body image. That is a tremendously important topic, so I automatically want to read it!

Release date: October 6th

21524446

There's a lot of hype following this book because it's a retelling of 1,001 Nights and so was The Wrath and The Dawn, a popular book published earlier this year. Regardless, I'm looking forward to reading this one because I think it has quite a bit of potential.

Release date: December 29th

23633796

This one sort of reminds me of Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen, but it still sounds like an incredibly emotional and beautiful book. I'm looking forward to it!

Release date: October 20th

18658082

I'm typically not so big on historical fiction books. However, this one looks like something I might really enjoy. It has a total BA main character and a teen spy doesn't sound like the most boring plot I've ever heard. I feel like this is going to be a great read!

Release date: October 6th

24827938

Okay, I'm not going to lie, I totally requested this one on Netgalley because I thought the cover was cute, (I obviously didn't read the writing on the cover) but it still looks like a good book. Despite the fact that I'm not huge on suspense YA books, I have high hopes for this one!

7. Need

Release date: November 3rd

20550148

The plot alone is equally terrifying and fascinating. I truthfully have never really read a YA horror book, so I'm looking forward to this one because it just seems so scary since it's something that I could see happening!

Release date: September 28th

26114681

I've been reading a lot of New Adult books here recently. I'm excited to read this one because it looks like a fun and romantic read!

Release date: October 1st

25246253

Pretty much any book that has anything related to music on the cover is something I'm bound to pick up.

Released date: November 17th

25223115

I'm looking forward to this one because it seems to have a lovely focus on female friendship. I enjoy YA books that have a decent portrayal of this. Can it be November already?

Okay, I know that I'm cutting it close with the whole fall thing with some of these! However, I was really dying to include some of those that are published later in November and December. So forgive me with the cheating that I did here. What about you guys? Are you guys looking forward to any of these?

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Best YA Book Boyfriends

Tuesday, September 15, 2015 11 comments
You know the drill, Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week is a freebie topic, so naturally, I chose to talk about my ten favorite YA book boyfriends. I'm definitely going to be leaving out many, these are just some that I thought of off the top of my head.

1. Adam Wilde from If I Stay

Isn't the kid who played Adam in the movie just gorgeous?! Obviously, he isn't as great as Adam from the book though. Adam is just one of those characters that immediately became one of my favorites. He's such a passionate and genuine guy, plus he's a musician. That's the whole package deal right there.

9961796

Regardless of my feelings towards Lola, it's impossible not to love Cricket. He's loved Lola for forever and I love the fact that there's no other girl that he's secretly involved with. He's clear with his feelings for Lola from the beginning and he continually proves them as well.

18692431

If you haven't read this book yet, pick it up immediately. It's just such a touching read. Olly is such a hilarious and witty love interest that you can't help but swoon over.

4. Jonah Griggs from On the Jellicoe Road

1162022

I'm not going to say anything else for fear of going into over fangirl mode

5. Perry from Under The Never Sky

10756656

He's such a selfless character and his love for Aria is so touching and heartbreaking. I just love him so much, even when he's doing pretty terrible things.

6. Jase Garrett from My Life Next Door

12294652

Jase is such a breath of fresh air from all the bad boy love interests in YA. He's a complete and total good boy. He does everything for his family, and he loves Sam with all his heart. What more could you want in a love interest?

7. Levi from Fangirl

16068905

I wasn't sure how I felt about Levi at first, but wow he definitely grew on me. He completely gets Cath out of her shell and sees her for who she really is. He's totally swoonworthy to say the least.

8. Four from Divergent

Tobias/Four is very very attractive. Not to mention how incredible and loving he was in the books.

9. Augustus Waters from The Fault in Our Stars

I felt like this couldn't be left off of here.

10. Dexter from This Lullaby

22205

He's yet another musician, but Dexter is just so quirky and has such a good heart. I love how awkward he is, even though you typically wouldn't expect that from a lead singer of a band.

Top Finished Series I Have Yet to Finish

Tuesday, September 8, 2015 16 comments

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week, the theme is ten finished series that I have yet to finish. This is a difficult but good topic and I'm happy to do it!

1. Under The Never Sky

10756656

I've only read the first book in this series so far, but I'm working on the others now!

2. Sloppy Firsts: Jessica Darling Series

138202

I've heard a lot of really great things about the Jessica Darling series so I'm not sure why I haven't managed to pick this one up yet? I can't believe the first book has been out since 2001!

3. Weetzie Bat Series

44353

It's probably even worse that I somehow managed to miss this one. But in my defense, it was released before I was even born so I just completely missed out on it.

4. Harry Potter

3

I have only read the first four books so I feel like I have to read the other books at some point. I just got hopelessly stuck on the fifth book and gave up completely. But one day I do plan on checking out the whole series again.

5. Perfect Chemistry

4268157

I read the first book but I plan on reading the others in the series also. It's a fascinating concept and I loved this book way more than I first expected.

6. Cinder

11235712

The first book immediately drew me in but I'm sort of holding back on reading the others. Also, I know this one has more books coming out (or at least one) so I'm definitely cheating here, but I felt like it needed to be thrown in there anyway because it's a huge one on my list!

7. Delirium

11614718

Not sure how I missed out on this one. I actually haven't read anything by Lauren Oliver even though I know she's a huge Young Adult author. I don't know, I guess I've just always figured that her books aren't my thing, but I can't help but consider giving them a try and see what happens.

Okay so I'm going to fall a little short on getting ten on this list because I'm way too tired. This was way more difficult than I expected it would be! I mean, the most difficult part of it was trying to remember series that I want to read that are actually completed. Most of the ones that I'm interested in are more recent and still coming out with new books. Anyways, I look forward to seeing what everyone else could up with for this list!

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Characters I Didn't Click With

Tuesday, September 1, 2015 3 comments

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week the theme is top ten characters that you just didn't click with.

1. Reagan from Open Road Summer

16081202

A lot of people love this book and I enjoy some of it, but I didn't like Reagan at all. There's so many issues that I had with her general attitude, especially towards females that weren't her best friend. I wanted so badly to like her but I just couldn't.

2. Emaline from The Moon and More

23281629

This is one of my least favorite Sarah Dessen books. While I loved the strong female friendship this book has, I just couldn't connect to Emaline like I do with some of her other characters.

3. Rhiannon from Every Day

13262783

As much as I love A, I just couldn't click with Rhiannon in this one. Maybe it'll be different in "Another Day" since we get to see from her point of view, but I just didn't really get her.

4. Bella Swan from Twilight

41865

I don't HATE Bella but I don't really get her either. I don't relate to how she relies on men as much as she does. She's just not a strong female character in YA books, in my opinion.

5. America Singer from The Selection

10507293

She's a hard character to relate with. I just hated how she would string along two guys but get jealous if Maxon wasn't giving her his full attention. She's selfish and immature honestly.

6. Lola from Lola and the Boy Next Door

9961796

Another character who strung along two boys. I also wasn't sure what to make of her costumes and wigs. Yes, it was apart of who she is but I also felt like she kind of used it as a mask to hide who she really is and we never got to see her true self.

7. All the characters from Until Friday Night

22522202

I've made my feelings on this book pretty clear. I didn't like any of the characters in this book really. I felt sorry for both the main characters at time, but I also didn't like how they used it as an excuse to treat other characters poorly.

8. Emmy from Emmy & Oliver

13132816

I love this book and many of Robin Benway's other work as well. However, I just felt like Emmy was a relatively boring character. She wasn't as exciting as the other characters in the book or even like Audrey from Benway's book Audrey Wait!

9. Margo Spiegelman from Paper Towns

6442769

Margo was a difficult character to click with. I love Q but Margo wasn't an easy character to really get. Maybe things would have been different if we saw things from her point of view but I doubt it.

10. Molly from 99 Days

22836575

I tried hard to sympathize with Molly because of how everyone was treating her from the beginning. However, she kept making terrible decisions and making it hard for me to feel anything but irritation towards her.

Top Ten Young Adult Romance Books 101

Tuesday, August 25, 2015 0 comments

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature from The Broke and The Bookish. This week the theme is top ten books that would be on your syllabus if you taught X 101. I picked Young Adult Romance. It's kind of specific but I thought I'd give it a shot!

1. Perfect Chemistry

22548197

This book is the modern Romeo & Juliet type story. It's a new spin on the star crossed lover story because Alex, the male lead, is involved in a life of violence and gangs. On the other side, Brittany is the privileged unattainable white girl.

2. Anna and the French Kiss

 6936382

This book has slowly become one of the most notable Young Adult books and it's not hard to see why. All three books in this series have amazing romances and so it would definitely be required for my YA Romance class.

3. The Truth About Forever

51737

Macy and Wes will always been one of my favorite YA couples. This book has a lot more to the plot then just the romance, but it's still a pretty large part of it.

4. Pushing The Limits

10194514

This book is a little like Perfect Chemistry in the respect that the main characters come from two completely different worlds. However, I really love this book because of the strong bond that gradually forms between Noah and Echo.

5. My Life Next Door

12294652

Jace is what I would consider to be everything that I want in a male love interest. That alone makes this an important Young Adult romance book.

6. Slammed

13372690

This one has a great deal of drama which can kind of take away from the actual romance between Will and Layken. But I do love the romance between them so much, especially in the last two books.

7. On The Fence

18298225

Any Kasie West contemporary is great in my opinion. I picked this one specifically because I love the whole girl falls in love with her brothers best friend cliché. This one has a twist since Charlie is a huge tomboy, I found this to be different since often it seems like the girl silently pines after him or she absolutely despises being around him. Charlie constantly hangs out with Braden and I really liked the slow build of the romance that brews.

8. If I Stay

4374400

This is a heartbreaking novel but I absolutely adore the relationship between Adam and Mia.

9. The Fault in Our Stars

11870085

I was doing my best to avoid this book since I know it's on literally every Young Adult book list out there. But it was simply unavoidable. The romance between Augustus and Hazel is one of my all time favorites.

10. On The Jellicoe Road

2999475

I only have two words to say about this book: Jonah Griggs. It doesn't get much better than him. I mean all of these love interests are incredible, but I don't think anyone can top Griggs.
